Welcome to G.R.E.A.T. in India

India is an emerging industrialised nation with a very young population and its demographic trend means that it will soon constitute the world´s largest population. Due to constant economic growth there is a high demand for skilled personnel on the medium level and an equal demand for decent work opportunities. Still, vocational education and training is of low significance in the country.

The informal learning sector contributes a considerable share to skill development of Indian professionals but does not suffice to cover actual demands. Consequently, a number of reforms have been initiated in recent years with the aim of expanding India's formal vocational training system in order to be able to provide the skills required by the economy in both quantitative and qualitative terms.

G.R.E.A.T. in India actively engages in numerous areas of VET research in India. The center explores the Indian education and training system and focuses on current issues from the perspective of both young people in education and training and the labour market. Research focuses on the significance of formal and informal vocational education and training, transition research, the implementation of competence-oriented teaching-learning approaches and the quality of vocational education and training in India.

G.R.E.A.T. in India cooperates with high-profile Indian and German researchers in the context of VET research. In addition, it is also involved in the evaluation of several projects in the field of vocational education and training with reference to India. One example is the qualification of Indian training masters (welding and mechatronics) in a three-year cooperation between India and Germany.
